Italy: Port workers in Trieste and Genoa to block port operations from October 15th

Port workers in Trieste and Genoa plan to stage indefinite blocking protests at both ports from Friday, October 15 th. The purpose of the action is to pressure the Italian government to abandon plans to make Green Passes (COVID-free certificate) mandatory for all workers in Italy.

Disruptions to port operations, including general cargo and passenger ferry services, are almost certain should the protests go ahead till Wednesday, October 20th. Congestion may extend to La Spezia, Leghorn and Venice seaports as a consequence.

Lingering shipping delays are likely following any protests as port authorities work to clear backlogs.

IMO 2020 Low Sulphur Surcharge
Applicable from January,1st 2020

A Crane Lifting a Container

Effective 1st January 2020, The International Maritime Organization (IMO) will introduce new regulations
restricting all sea-going vessels such that they must use fuel (low Sulphur bunker) with a maximum 0.5 %
Sulphur content. This will significantly improve the global carbon footprint of ocean carriers and sea-going
vessels worldwide, reducing their Sulphur emissions by 85%.
The global shipping industry will be heavily impacted, as the new IMO 2020 Low Sulphur Regulations will increase shipping fuel costs worldwide. Current indications are that the cost of Low Sulphur fuel will be
approximately US$180/ton dearer than the current “dirty bunker”. This is an increase of about 40%.
